Oh, what a glorious night it was! With this year’s Academy Awards behind us, it is a great time to look back and reflect on the top moments from the evening. With many in high spirits, it’s no surprise that the evening was a huge success. Here are some of the most memorable moments of the 2020 Academy Awards.
Making history
This year the academy awards made history when the award for best picture was awarded to a non-English foreign film. The award went to the South Korean film “parasite’ beating out the WWI epic ‘1917’. This historic win was the first time the award has been given to an international foreign language production, and it may be the first of many.
This one’s for the ladies
When super ladies Sigourney Weaver, Brie Larson, and Gal Gadot stood to introduce the Oscar’s first female conductor, they took a moment to use humor to make a powerful feminist statement. The ladies announced that they were going to start a fight club after the show. As a requirement, all the men who wished to participate would have to stay shirtless. The women went on to explain that the loser would have to answer annoying reported questions about what it is like to be a woman in Hollywood. Their empowering statement was welcomed by the crowd.
Riding Your Coat tales
Brad Pitt is no stranger to accepting awards, and when he accepted the Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ he was ready to give his acceptance speech. Pit beat Al Pachino for the award, and during his acceptance speech, he praised director Quinton Tarantino and also thanked his children for their support. However, the funniest moment was when he looked over at his costar Leonardo DiCaprio and said, ‘Leo Ill ride on your coat tails any day man, the view is fantastic”.
The Cats are back
In a moment of hilarity, Rebel Wilson and James Corden appeared dressed as two larger than life cats.
The two wore furry catsuits as they presented the award for best visual effects. The pair had starred in the box office flop ‘Cats,’ and their costumes not so subtly made fun of the film. The theatrical release of the Cats had relied heavily on visual effects, and the two comedians were very quick to the point that out.
Tom Hanks Pays Tribute in the most fitting way
Right before the awards, it was announced that legendary actors and Hollywood royal Kirk Douglas had passed away. Many in Hollywood were quick to pay tribute, but none was more fitting than Tom Hanks, who, while announcing the opening of the academy awards museum, made sure to scream out ‘I am Spartacus.’ This was in reference to the iconic role played by Douglas in his heyday.
